The clue was already in the 2015 images
Sputnik Planitia is a roughly million-square-kilometre basin filled mainly with nitrogen ice. In its northern cellular plains, New Horizons recorded narrow dark boundaries bordered by more diffuse darkened zones. Their distribution and texture prompted a comparison with terrestrial glacier surfaces darkened after wetting.
02 · RAIN CANNOT EXPLAIN THE MARKS
Rain cannot explain the marks
Pluto’s thin atmosphere and low surface temperature do not permit nitrogen rain to wet the glacier in the familiar terrestrial way. The proposed route therefore begins beneath the ice: pressure and heat at the base may allow a small amount of nitrogen to melt, enter fractures and move upward.

The finding changes Pluto, not the definition of habitability
If the interpretation is correct, Pluto would add transient surface liquid nitrogen to an already active inventory of solid-state glaciers, convection and volatile transport. Nitrogen liquid at cryogenic temperature is not liquid water, and the study makes no claim that the site is habitable.
