The answer in three steps

  1. 1Mercury's sidereal rotation takes about 58.6 Earth days.
  2. 2Its orbit takes about 88 Earth days, locking spin and orbit in a 3:2 ratio.
  3. 3Because Mercury moves around the Sun while it rotates, the Sun returns to the same sky position only after two Mercury years.

01 · A DAY HAS TWO MEANINGS

A day has two meanings

A sidereal day is one rotation relative to distant stars. A solar day is the interval from one local noon to the next. On Mercury those clocks differ dramatically.

02 · THE RATIO IS THREE TO TWO

The ratio is three to two

In two 88-day orbits Mercury completes three rotations. Radar measurements overturned the earlier belief that the planet kept one face permanently toward the Sun.

03 · ECCENTRICITY HELPS THE RESONANCE

Eccentricity helps the resonance

Mercury's orbit is noticeably elliptical, so orbital speed and solar tidal torque vary. That variation makes the 3:2 state dynamically accessible and stable compared with simple synchronous rotation.

04 · THE SUN CAN APPEAR TO REVERSE

The Sun can appear to reverse

Near perihelion Mercury's orbital angular speed briefly exceeds its rotational angular speed. From some longitudes the Sun would slow, stop and move backward before resuming.

05 · LONG SUNLIGHT DOES NOT MEAN ONE TEMPERATURE

Long sunlight does not mean one temperature

Surface temperature also depends on latitude, terrain, reflectivity and whether a place lies in permanent shadow. A long solar day is the dominant rhythm, not the whole climate.
