Every part of a body attracts every other part. On a large object, high regions bear extra weight and material moves or deforms toward a surface of nearly equal gravitational potential.

02 · ROCK CAN HOLD A SHAPE

Rock can hold a shape

A small boulder is not spherical because chemical bonds and friction overpower its weak self-gravity. The same competition lets small asteroids preserve jagged or elongated forms.

03 · SIZE CHANGES THE WINNER

Size changes the winner

As mass grows, internal pressure grows. Beyond a composition-dependent scale, rock or ice behaves plastically over geological time, rounding the body into .

04 · ROUND IS NOT PERFECT

Round is not perfect

Rotation produces an equatorial bulge. Mountains, impact basins, tides and internal density differences add smaller departures. Planets are approximately spherical, not ideal mathematical balls.

05 · RUBBLE PILES COMPLICATE THE PICTURE

Rubble piles complicate the picture

Some asteroids are loose aggregates held together by gravity and contact forces. They may reshape, spin apart or form top-like profiles without becoming fully round.

Shape records history

An irregular outline can retain evidence of impacts, fragments and spin. A rounder body tells us self-gravity had enough time and strength to erase much of that earlier geometry.
