A minimal scientific definition is variation acquired and maintained through . Stronger definitions may demand symbols, teaching or cumulative improvement, so debates can partly be debates about thresholds.

02 · GROUP DIFFERENCES ARE THE STARTING PATTERN

Group differences are the starting pattern

Chimpanzee communities differ in tool use and social customs; whale clans use learned vocal repertoires; birds transmit song variants. Geography alone does not reveal how the pattern arose.

03 · SOCIAL LEARNING NEEDS EVIDENCE

Social learning needs evidence

Researchers use experiments, network analysis, developmental records and exclusion of genetic or ecological alternatives. The stronger the claim, the more direct the evidence for transmission should be.

04 · TRADITIONS CAN SHAPE SURVIVAL

Traditions can shape survival

Learned migration routes and foraging techniques can persist for generations. Losing knowledgeable individuals may therefore remove information that genes and habitat alone cannot quickly restore.

05 · CULTURE CAN AFFECT EVOLUTION

Culture can affect evolution

Culturally transmitted diet, movement and mate choice can change selection and population structure. Genes and culture are not competing explanations; they can alter one another.
