Sunlight and dry air drive evaporation through stomata. As water leaves microscopic surfaces inside a leaf, curved air–water interfaces pull on the remaining liquid.
02 · XYLEM CARRIES TENSION
Xylem carries tension
Dead, hollow xylem cells form conduits. Cohesion links water molecules and adhesion helps them interact with conduit walls, allowing a pressure difference to be transmitted over many metres.
03 · ROOTS CONNECT TO WET SOIL
Roots connect to wet soil
Water moves from soil into roots along gradients in water potential. Root pressure can matter in some situations, but it is not the main engine lifting daytime flow to the crowns of tall trees.

Capillarity is not enough
Narrow tubes help stabilize columns, but ordinary capillary rise alone cannot account for the height and flow rate of a giant tree. The transpiration-driven pressure gradient does the larger job.
05 · NEGATIVE PRESSURE IS RISKY
Negative pressure is risky
Water under tension can nucleate vapor bubbles. Cavitation blocks conduits; plants limit damage through pit membranes, redundant pathways, new xylem and stomatal closure.
