Start with measurable events
A sender releases a compound, a receiver detects it and its behavior or physiology changes. Experiments can separate these steps without assuming that either organism intends to exchange information.
02 · AIR CARRIES CHEMICAL CUES
Air carries chemical cues
Herbivore damage can alter volatile organic compounds. Neighbors exposed to those mixtures may prime defenses, while insects can use the same odor landscape to find hosts or prey.

Belowground routes are harder
Roots change soil chemistry, and fungal networks connect many plants. Demonstrating that a molecule moved through a network is easier than showing that it evolved to benefit a particular receiver.
04 · SIGNAL IS NOT ALWAYS COOPERATION
Signal is not always cooperation
A receiver may exploit an unavoidable leak. The sender may benefit, be harmed or be unaffected. Ecological communication includes and manipulation, not only mutual help.
05 · SOUND CLAIMS NEED STRONGER TESTS
Sound claims need stronger tests
Plants produce vibrations and respond to mechanical stimuli. A critical review found no convincing evidence that plants communicate with one another acoustically in the stronger, information-transfer sense.
Damaged or stressed plants can release volatile chemicals that change responses in nearby plants and animals.
A laboratory response does not by itself reveal how often the exchange matters in the wild, who benefits, or whether selection shaped the signal for communication.
06 · USE THE METAPHOR CAREFULLY
Use the metaphor carefully
“Talk” makes an invisible chemical ecology intuitive. It becomes misleading when it imports words, decisions or awareness that the experiment did not measure.
