01 · FRESH DOES NOT MEAN PURE

Fresh does not mean pure

River water contains calcium, bicarbonate, sodium, chloride and many other dissolved substances. “Freshwater” means low compared with seawater, not an absence of ions.

02 · WEATHERING LOADS THE RIVERS

Weathering loads the rivers

Slightly acidic rain and soil water react with rock. Flowing water carries the released ions toward lakes and oceans, while groundwater adds another route.

03 · EVAPORATION LEAVES SALT BEHIND

Evaporation leaves salt behind

Water molecules enter the atmosphere; most dissolved ions do not. Rain returns relatively fresh water to land, and repeated cycling concentrates the ocean reservoir.

04 · THE SEAFLOOR ALSO PARTICIPATES

The seafloor also participates

Hydrothermal circulation adds some dissolved materials and removes others as seawater reacts with hot crust. Volcanic and seafloor sources matter alongside continental weathering.

05 · THERE ARE EXITS

There are exits

Shell-making organisms incorporate ions, particles settle into sediments, and minerals precipitate or react with oceanic crust. Over long times, inputs and removals approach a dynamic balance.

06 · WHY RIVERS STAY DILUTE

Why rivers stay dilute

A river’s water is replaced quickly and constantly diluted by precipitation. The ocean is the long-lived collecting reservoir, so the same landscape-to-sea transfer produces very different concentrations.
