01 · EACH STAR IS IN ORBIT

Each star is in orbit

A spiral arm is not a solid spoke holding a galaxy together. Stars, gas and dark matter follow orbits in a shared gravitational potential, while density patterns can persist through them.

02 · ROTATION CURVES EXPOSE MISSING MASS

Rotation curves expose missing mass

If most mass followed the visible light, orbital speed should fall far from the bright centre. Many measured rotation curves stay approximately flat, implying more gravitating mass at large radius.

03 · CLUSTERS REPEAT THE MESSAGE

Clusters repeat the message

Galaxy speeds in clusters, hot X-ray gas and gravitational lensing also require more gravity than baryonic matter supplies. The Bullet Cluster adds spatial separation between hot gas and much of the inferred mass.

04 · A HALO CHANGES THE BOOKKEEPING

A halo changes the bookkeeping

In the standard cosmological model, galaxies form inside extended dark-matter halos. The halo contributes mass without emitting ordinary starlight, allowing outer material to remain bound.

05 · ALTERNATIVE GRAVITY IS TESTED TOO

Alternative gravity is tested too

Modified-gravity models can reproduce parts of galaxy phenomenology, but they must also match lensing, clusters, the cosmic microwave background and structure growth. The Bullet Cluster is an important case where visible matter alone struggles to reproduce the lensing map. How strongly it excludes each modified-gravity model remains debated because results depend on baryonic-mass estimates, merger structure and whether an additional unseen component is allowed.
