01 · WHAT “CONSTANT” MEANS
What “constant” means
In ΛCDM, dark energy is represented by a cosmological constant, Λ. Its density does not dilute as space expands, and its is w = −1. This is a compact description of the data, not a direct identification of a substance.

2.8–4.2σ hint03 · WHERE THE HINT APPEARS
Where the hint appears
DESI’s ruler is combined with the cosmic microwave background and supernova distances. In the 2025 DR2 analysis, evolving-dark-energy models were preferred over ΛCDM at 2.8 to 4.2 standard deviations, depending on the supernova compilation.
04 · WHY ONE NUMBER IS NOT A DISCOVERY
Why one number is not a discovery
The result is not a single direct reading of dark energy. Calibration, population effects in supernovae, correlations among parameters and the chosen model all affect the comparison. Different combinations produce different significance.
05 · WHAT WOULD MAKE THE CASE STRONGER
What would make the case stronger
Independent surveys must reproduce the same time pattern with different instruments and systematics. A coherent signal across supernovae, lensing, clustering and the growth of structure would be much harder to dismiss.

Even if the hint persists, current data do not identify the underlying field or a unique time dependence. Future DESI releases and independent surveys can strengthen, reshape or remove it.
06 · THE HONEST ANSWER
The honest answer
Dark energy may evolve, and DESI has made that possibility more interesting. Today the cosmological constant remains a viable baseline. “A hint worth pursuing” is more accurate than “dark energy has been shown to change.”
