Early performance requires selecting and monitoring each step. With repetition, useful predictions improve and the sequence demands less working memory and conscious correction.

Chunks become new units

The brain can represent several actions as one higher-level routine. Neural studies of habits show activity concentrated around the beginning and end of a learned sequence.

03 · CONTEXT STARTS THE ROUTINE

Context starts the routine

Habits are strongly cued by place, time, preceding action and objects. Repeating a behaviour in a stable context strengthens cue-response association more than repetition scattered across unrelated settings.

04 · SKILL AUTOMATICITY IS NOT THE SAME AS HABIT

Skill automaticity is not the same as habit

Skill describes how accurately and efficiently an action is performed. Habit describes control driven by cues and relatively insensitive to changes in outcome value. A skilled action can remain flexible, while a habitual action need not require advanced skill; neither is simply unconscious.

05 · EFFICIENCY CREATES RIGIDITY

Efficiency creates rigidity

A routine optimized for yesterday's environment may continue after rewards or rules change. Breaking a habit often requires changing cues and installing an alternative response, not relying on intention alone.
