00 · IN THREE MINUTES

The answer in three steps

  1. 1Convection and rotation organize electrical currents in the liquid outer core.
  2. 2The resulting magnetic field varies continually and sometimes enters a transitional configuration.
  3. 3Rocks record repeated polarity reversals, but current weakening alone does not predict an imminent one.

01 · A MOVING CONDUCTOR MAKES THE FIELD

A moving conductor makes the field

Liquid iron alloy circulates as the core loses heat and material freezes onto the inner core. Rotation helps organize the flow, and electric currents sustain a self-exciting dynamo.

02 · THE DIPOLE IS ONLY THE LARGEST PATTERN

The dipole is only the largest pattern

Earth's familiar north-south field is accompanied by weaker, more complex components. Secular variation reflects changing core flow, so field strength and pole position are never fixed.

03 · INSTABILITY CAN REORGANIZE POLARITY

Instability can reorganize polarity

Numerical dynamos reverse without an external switch. Complex field components grow, the axial dipole weakens and a dipole of opposite sign can emerge from turbulent core dynamics.

04 · ROCKS PRESERVE THE SEQUENCE

Rocks preserve the sequence

Cooling lava and accumulating sediments can lock in magnetic orientation. Correlated and radiometrically dated records reveal many reversals with highly irregular spacing.

05 · A REVERSAL IS NOT A SUDDEN BLACKOUT

A reversal is not a sudden blackout

Transitions take hundreds to thousands of years, and the field becomes complex rather than simply disappearing. The atmosphere remains the main shield against most energetic radiation at the surface.
