01 · A DESERT IS DEFINED BY WATER
A desert is defined by water
Deserts are regions where precipitation is scarce relative to potential water loss. Some lie in subtropics, others at high altitude or high latitude, so hot and cold deserts both exist.
02 · BARE GROUND HAS A SMALL THERMAL BUFFER
Bare ground has a small thermal buffer
Sand and rock surfaces can warm sharply under direct sunlight. Without much vegetation or wet soil, less incoming energy is spent evaporating water, and surface temperature rises quickly.

03 · NIGHT OPENS AN INFRARED WINDOW
Night opens an infrared window
After sunset the ground emits longwave infrared radiation. Water vapour and clouds absorb and return some of that energy; when both are scarce, net is stronger.
04 · AIR COOLS FROM THE GROUND UPWARD
Air cools from the ground upward
The lowest atmosphere loses heat by contact and mixing with the cooling surface. Calm conditions can create a strong near-surface inversion, while wind can bring warmer air down.
05 · NOT EVERY DESERT NIGHT IS FREEZING
Not every desert night is freezing
Cloud cover, humidity, elevation, season, soil type and wind control the actual temperature drop. The mechanism explains a large daily range, not a universal minimum.
