Temperature does not fall smoothly through 0°C when moist soil freezes. Energy must be removed to convert liquid water into ice. During that phase change, released latent heat keeps the soil close to freezing—a pause called the —even as the air above becomes much colder.

GeoCryoAI integrated 62.71 million in-situ measurements with 3.3 billion remote-sensing observations and physics-informed constraints. It produced statistically downscaled 30-metre grids and reported 96.4% candidate-detection accuracy. Those numbers describe the framework and its validation, not a thermometer placed in every grid cell.

04 · NEAR-ZERO SOIL CAN STILL BE BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE

Near-zero soil can still be biologically active

Liquid water can persist within the active layer while the temperature is buffered. Microbes may therefore continue decomposing organic matter later into the cold season, creating carbon dioxide and methane. That link makes the duration of the zero curtain relevant to permafrost-carbon models.

05 · A MAP IS A FORECASTING INPUT, NOT AN EMISSIONS TOTAL

A map is a forecasting input, not an emissions total

The framework is designed to ingest observations from missions such as NISAR and improve seasonal forecasts. Converting a thermal window into greenhouse-gas flux still requires information about soil carbon, oxygen, microbes, hydrology and transport to the atmosphere.
