Discovery begins with a discrepancy
A specimen may not fit known descriptions, or genetic sampling may reveal a deep lineage. Researchers first rule out age, sex, season, disease and ordinary variation within an existing species.
02 · SPECIES CONCEPTS ANSWER DIFFERENT QUESTIONS
Species concepts answer different questions
The biological concept emphasizes reproductive isolation; phylogenetic approaches diagnose lineages; ecological approaches emphasize distinct niches. Hybridizing, fossil or asexual organisms expose the limits of any single rule.

Evidence must be comparative
A candidate is compared with museum types and populations across its range. Shape, anatomy, calls, behavior, habitat and DNA become powerful when they converge rather than merely differ once.
04 · NAMES AND SPECIES ARE NOT IDENTICAL
Names and species are not identical
Taxonomy decides the boundary; nomenclature regulates how names are created and used. The ICZN does not tell biologists which species concept must win.
05 · A TYPE STABILIZES THE NAME
A type stabilizes the name
For animals, a name-bearing type provides the reference to which the scientific name is permanently attached. It need not be the most typical individual or the complete definition of the species.

Later data may split, merge or move a species to another genus. That is not necessarily failure: scientific names preserve a traceable debate while the biological hypothesis improves.
