The feeling is vivid enough that the explanation seems to fit. But the scientific evidence points in a different direction entirely, one that requires no mystical storage and no hidden archive of prior lives.

What researchers have established is that déjà vu is a product of ordinary memory machinery operating in an unusual configuration. The sensation is real; the interpretation that past-life recall causes it is not supported by any evidence in the literature. Surveys reviewed by Brown suggest the experience is common across healthy adults, which itself argues against exotic origins.

02 · Two systems, not one

Recollection and familiarity are separate processes

Memory researchers distinguish two components of recognition. Recollection is the retrieval of a — the context, the place, the moment. 03 · Structural overlap

The present scene may echo a past one

One well-supported inference is that the current environment shares spatial or structural features with a scene encountered previously. The layout of a room, the angle of a corridor, the arrangement of objects — any of these could activate a familiarity signal tied to an older experience without retrieving that experience itself. The match is partial, not complete, which is why the feeling is uncanny rather than simply recognitive.

Cleary and colleagues used virtual-reality environments to test this idea experimentally. Participants shown novel scenes that shared spatial configurations with previously studied scenes reported higher rates of déjà vu. This is an inference made concrete: the structural-overlap account predicts exactly this pattern, and the laboratory data are consistent with it, though the paradigm captures only one possible route to the experience.

04 · The missing source

Familiarity without a retrievable origin

The defining strangeness of déjà vu is not the familiarity itself but the . People experiencing it typically know, in the same moment, that they cannot actually have been here before — or that the memory, if it exists, is completely inaccessible. This metacognitive awareness is what separates déjà vu from ordinary misidentification.

Urquhart and O'Connor demonstrated a related effect using words: participants shown novel items that had been processed in a way that inflated familiarity signals were more likely to notice the strangeness of that familiarity — an awareness of novelty despite a sense of prior encounter. This laboratory analogue is not identical to naturalistic déjà vu, but it isolates the same core tension between a strong familiarity signal and the absence of a retrievable source.

05 · What experiments can and cannot show

The lab reproduces parts, not the whole

Controlled experiments have made genuine progress. Virtual-reality paradigms can elevate déjà vu reports by manipulating spatial overlap. Word-familiarity studies can induce the awareness-of-novelty component. These results show that familiarity without recall is experimentally tractable, while stopping short of identifying one complete cause of natural déjà vu.

What experiments have not done is identify a single neural mechanism that explains all instances. Déjà vu occurs in healthy people, in people with temporal-lobe epilepsy, and under certain drug states — a distribution that suggests multiple routes to the same phenomenology. The experimental literature, taken together, supports the familiarity-recollection dissociation as the common thread, but it does not rule out that different causes can produce that dissociation through different pathways.

06 · What remains open

A single cause has not been confirmed

The honest summary of the science is that the familiarity-without-recall framework is well supported, the structural-overlap hypothesis is consistent with experimental data, and the precise neural implementation is still being worked out. Brown's review of the broader déjà vu literature makes clear that the phenomenon has attracted serious empirical attention but that no consensus mechanism has emerged. That is not a failure; it reflects the genuine difficulty of studying a brief, unpredictable, private experience.

What the evidence does rule out is the supernatural account. Déjà vu does not require a past life, a prophetic dream, or any information source outside the brain's own memory systems. It requires only that familiarity and recollection — two processes that usually travel together — occasionally come apart. Understanding why they do, and under what conditions, remains one of the more tractable open questions in human memory research.
