The destination overlaps; the path and the traveller’s control can differ.
04 · DIFFICULT CONDITIONS
Noise and unfamiliar words change the load
Degraded speech recruits extra attention and executive control. Dense print can likewise overload decoding or working memory.
The same learner can therefore perform differently across topics and environments without one mode being inherently shallow.

05 · LEARNING IS MORE THAN EXPOSURE
Retrieval and explanation still matter
Understanding during reading or listening does not guarantee durable memory. Pausing to recall, explain, compare and apply can strengthen either mode.
If audio becomes background while attention moves elsewhere, shared language machinery cannot compensate for missing engagement.
The same story can reach meaning through ink or sound. Much of comprehension is shared, but the route—and the control the learner has over it—is not identical.

Match mode to learner, material and goal
For pronunciation or dramatic dialogue, voice may carry essential information. For equations, unfamiliar names or close comparison, visible text may offer control.
Combining modes can help when they complement one another; redundant streams can also distract when poorly timed.
