01 · THE DICTIONARY METAPHOR

Useful, but too tidy

Word knowledge links meaning, sound, spelling and grammar across interacting networks rather than an alphabetical list.

Researchers use “mental lexicon” to name our word knowledge, not to claim that the brain contains a separate book-like store. Concepts, experience and context are entwined with words.

02 · A CUE SPREADS

One idea activates neighbours

Thinking of “doctor” can make hospital, nurse and patient more available; a sound fragment can activate words that begin alike. These are different kinds of connection.

Activation spreads through many candidates. Retrieval is therefore selective: the system must boost a useful form and suppress or outlast competitors.

03 · LAYERS MEET

Meaning is not enough for speech

To say a word, semantic information must connect to phonological form and an ordered motor plan. Reading also brings orthography into the exchange.

The layers interact but need not succeed at the same instant. That staggered architecture explains partial access.

04 · CONTEXT NARROWS THE FIELD

A sentence prepares what is likely

Grammar and prior meaning constrain the next candidates before a word is fully heard or read. Frequency and recent use also change accessibility.

Prediction is not clairvoyance. It is the use of structure and experience to make a crowded search faster.

05 · ON THE TIP OF THE TONGUE

Failure can preserve fragments

In a tip-of-the-tongue state, parts of a word’s meaning can be active even when its full sound form cannot yet be retrieved.

You may know the first sound, syllable count or related words. A later cue can tip the network into a stable phonological pattern.

The missing word is not necessarily absent; access to one of its layers is temporarily incomplete.

06 · WHAT A NETWORK EXPLAINS

Structure predicts ease, not destiny

Highly connected or frequent words can be easier to reach, but dense neighbourhoods can also create competition. Age, language history and task all matter.

Network models compare measurable patterns of association and retrieval. They are explanatory tools, not literal wiring diagrams of every neuron.
