Most surviving Greek and Roman marble sculpture looks monochrome today, but many works were originally painted, gilded or assembled with colored materials.
Paint layers weathered, objects were buried, excavated, cleaned and displayed. The present surface records all of those histories, not only the artist’s final day.
02 · TRACES SMALLER THAN A COLOR FIELD
Evidence can hide in pores and tool marks
Pigment grains survive where abrasion and exposure were limited. Conservators begin with close visual and microscopic examination before sampling.
Colored stone, metal attachments, inlays and gilding also created polychromy; paint was only one technique.

Different instruments ask different questions
Raking light exposes surface relief; ultraviolet, visible and infrared imaging can reveal patterns; spectroscopy and microscopy can identify materials.
No instrument automatically restores a complete palette. Each detects particular traces under particular conditions.
04 · FROM TRACE TO MAP
A reconstruction assembles bounded inferences
Researchers map where evidence survives, compare related objects and test historically plausible materials. Missing areas remain inferential.

05 · NOT EVERY STATUE THE SAME
Polychromy was varied, not one bright uniform style
Date, region, material, function and later treatment matter. Skin, hair, garments, patterns, metal and stone could be handled differently.
“Ancient statues were colorful” corrects a misconception; it should not become a claim that every surface was fully opaque or identical.
The white marble museum is partly an afterimage. Many ancient works carried color, but the surviving traces are small and every reconstruction must show where evidence ends.

TRACE06 · HOW WHITE BECAME CLASSICAL
Loss became an aesthetic ideal
As ancient color faded, collectors and artists encountered pale marble. Modern casts, museums and neoclassical taste helped stabilize whiteness as the expected classical look.
Recovering polychromy changes how we see ancient craft and meaning, while also exposing the later history of taste.
